DataFed OGC WMS Client

The most widely used Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) specification is the Web Mapping Server (WMS) protocol for transferring maps and georeferenced data over the Internet. Data from WMS servers deliver georeferenced map images to standard Web browsers. Through a standard HTTP Get URL call, the user specifies the data desired layers to be overlaid, their image size and format, geo-rectangle and another parameters. If the URL call is made by a custom viewer, the returned OGC image can be overlaid with other georeferenced maps and data.

DataFed has two-way connection to OGC Web Map Servers (WMS) in that it both serves (publishes) and consumes (binds) data available through WMS compliant interfaces.

DataFed OGC WMS Client

Data layers provided by standard OGC Web Map Servers can be added into DataFed as data layers via suitable OGC WMS wrappers that translate the WMS GetMap request into syntax understood by DataFed. An OGC layers is treated as just another DataFed map image layer and can be used in the DataFed Viewer and with DataFed web services. A list of OGC WMS servers that have been ‘registered’ with DataFed are listed in the DataFed Catalog: http://webapps.datafed.net/datafed_catalog.aspx

If the OGC WMS Server you are interested in is not already in the DataFed Catalog, you can add a WMS using the following steps:

1.      Open the DataFed Viewer:

2.      Select File->Import

3.      Select the ‘Register’ button for OGC WMS

4.      Enter the OGC WMS Server URL

5.      The OGC WMS is now available for use within the DataFed environment
